π Survival Guide
1. Picking Colonists β Three People Decide Your Fate
Colonist selection is the single most important stepβmore critical than your landing site. The skill combinations of your three starting pawns determine whether you'll survive the first three days.
| Role | Required Skills | Deal Breakers |
|---|---|---|
| Builder | Construction β₯ 8, Crafting β₯ 5 | Slothful, Lazy |
| Grower/Cook | Plants β₯ 8, Cooking β₯ 6 | Pyromaniac (will burn your base!) |
| Researcher/Doctor | Intellectual β₯ 8, Medical β₯ 6 | Lazy, Volatile |
β οΈ Instant Rerolls: Pyromaniac, Volatile, Lazy β if you see any of these three traits, reroll immediately. Don't hesitate.
β
God-Tier Traits: Fast Learner, Iron-Willed, Industrious β lock them in the moment you see them.
2. Landing β The Right Spot Is Half the Battle
- Terrain: Beginners should pick Temperate Forest or Arid Shrubland. Avoid ice sheets and deserts.
- Mountains vs. Flat: Mountains are defensible but spawn infestations. Flat terrain is easy to build on but hard to defend. Large Hills is the sweet spotβsome mountain cover without too many bugs.
- Growing Season: At least 30/60 days (year-round is ideal). Anything shorter and you can't grow enough food.
- Stone Type: Prioritize Granite > Limestone > Sandstone. Granite walls are the toughest β and tougher walls = you live longer.
- Faction Proximity: Don't settle too close to pirates. Friendly tribe nearby is great for trade.
3. First 3 Days β Action Checklist
| Order | What to Do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | Plant rice in a growing zone | Rice harvests in ~3 days. Without food, nothing else matters. |
| Step 2 | Build a 7Γ7 wooden hut + roof | Temporary storage and sleeping quarters. Don't overbuildβyou'll replace it with stone later. |
| Step 3 | Place 3 sleeping spots + campfire | Sleeping on the floor indoors is fine; sleeping outside tanks mood. Campfire prevents hypothermia. |
| Step 4 | Butcher starting animals + cook simple meals | Packaged meals only last a few days. Hunt the animals already on the map first. |
| Step 5 | Set up indoor stockpile + haul supplies | Medicine, food, and components deteriorate outdoors. Get them inside ASAP. |
| Step 6 | Build research bench + start researching | First tech priority: Batteries β Solar Panels β Air Conditioning (freezer). |
π‘ Core Loop: RimWorld's survival loop is "Food β Shelter β Defense β Research." Stable food always comes first; building comes second.
4. Week One: From Surviving to Stable
- Build butcher table + stove: Simple meals won't last forever. Upgrade to fine meals ASAP (need stove + plants + meat/eggs).
- Build 3 individual bedrooms: Private rooms give +5 mood. Much better than a barracks.
- Build stonecutter's table + cut stone: Wood walls burn (one lightning strike = base gone). Switch to stone walls fast.
- Build a horseshoes pin: Cheapest recreation item. Prevents the "Recreation-starved" mood debuff.
- Set up a dumping stockpile: Corpses, rock chunks, and slag go far away β not inside your base.
